About us
The Association of Imaging Producers and Equipment Suppliers (AIPES) is a European Economic Interest Group (EEIG) based in Brussels (Belgium). AIPES represents the interests of all the major nuclear medicine tracer companies as well as the equipment manufacturers and a few contrast media manufacturers. Radiopharmaceutical products, which include ready to be used radiopharmaceuticals, generators, kits and precursors, are medicinal products which, when ready for use, contain one or more radionuclides (radioactive isotopes) included for a medicinal purpose (Article 1.6 of EC Directive 2001/83). Contrary to the majority of other medicinal products, radiopharmaceuticals are never sold to people in pharmacies, neither are they available as prescription products for self administration. They are delivered directly to hospitals, upon doctors' requests, and administered to patients under professional supervision, or to specialized nuclear medicine centres, where they are manipulated by medically trained personnel.
The equipment manufacturers produce the machines which permit to either manufacture radiopharmaceuticals or to inject or to detect radiopharmaceuticals in patients' bodies in view of the diagnosis and treatment of several serious diseases, such as cancer.
AIPES regularly coordinates its activities with CORAR and the Japanese industry association (JRPA), particularly on issues that relate to the international regulatory environment.
